Lucky me! I got to tag along for a farewell lunch for Peaps that her host family had for her this afternoon. She leaves the day after me (Thursday morning). Peaps and her friend Keri stayed with Ana, Celestino and their little baby Fabricio ("cheeks") during her first few months here in Ollanta. They also have a daughter who is a little bit older and goes to school in another town. Ana cooked a delicious meal of soup and a rice dish that I can't for the life of me remember what it is called. But never mind that, it was DELICIOUS. Ana and Celestino are now hosting a high school student from Seattle who also joined us for lunch. Fabricio is only about 3 months old but he looks like he could be twice that age. His chubby cheeks are irresistible. I just kept staring at him and thinking, "Wow. In four months we'll have a little guy too."
I was introduced to their 2 sweet dogs (Sando and Yogi), their pack? litter? flock? herd? family? of guinea pigs (cuy) that live in their kitchen, and their mystery gallina (chicken) who just showed up one day, never left and they have no idea where it came from. Even a chancho (pig) stopped by to see what we were doing, not that the dogs noticed enough to chase it away.
They are such a wonderful family. It was a very relaxed meal and I enjoyed very much how easy it was to talk to them. I definitely appreciate the speed at which people speak around here. It's slow enough that I actually have a shot of understanding, even with my poor comprehension skills! Overall, it was a lot of fun and I left VERY full.
